Once you have all your pre-swing fundamentals in place, you are now ready to make a powerful backswing. Good posture will give you a good range of motion, a successful grip will let the club face move correctly during your swing with out needing any compensations. Good ball position will then let your body work naturally and have a chance to repeat your golf swing returning the face of the club to the ball for solid contact. In this post you will learn two very important in-swing fundamentals that will guarantee a more powerful swing and atleast an additional10-15 yards off the tee box. The drills I have included in this post have help you get a start to extra distance.
I have created a program filled with swing drills that are designed to create as big an arc or (circle) with the club head as possible in the backswing. This is important because the bigger the arc the faster we will be able to have the club head moving at the ball to create power and distance. If I could compare it to something. Imagine our club head was a roller coaster and to have it going as fast as possible at the bottom of the hill or "arc of our swing" we would need to be starting from as high as possible. So what we we will be discussing is how to get your club head starting down from as high as possible without violating the fundamentals of a consistent golf swing. In the following two paragraphs we will address "width of arc" and turn or "Pivot" to create more speed, power and distance.
Lets first discuss your full swing pivot. I like to refer to it as a pivot instead of turn because some people will take the terminology "turn your shoulders" and just move their arms across their chest without using big muscles too coil up. If you look at the definition of "pivot" it is a rotation around a center point. In a powerful backswing I look for the logos on the players shirt along with the arms and club head to start working back together. I also look for the seem on the lead shoulder to get over top of or at least closer to the instep of the trail foot. The trail hip will react to what the upper body does, which means it would rotate back towards the trail heel (right heel for right hander). Below is one of the best drills you can do using the Golf Forever Swing Trainer program to achieve that. The resistance bands attached to the bar forces me into that postion.
Maintaining width with the hands and arms is the other key aspect in the golf swing that will be necessary for increased power. The higher we can get our hands while staying in good posture at the top of our backswing, the more power we will generate in the downswing. The thing you need to be careful about is your limitations. An effective backswing is where the body and arms are contiuously working together. Don't start making compensating moves in an effort make the club head travel further back in your backswing. I see that mistake all the time and it leads to a reverse pivot and loss of power. The fault that will happen is the lead arm collapses and you will get into a weak position at the top of the swing. Below is another excellent drill demonstrating getting maximum rotation and maintaining distance between hands and sternum. This is another drill I incoorporate into my lesson plans for my students that has worked tremendously. I highly suggest you get on this same plan by clicking the link below.
