How stop hitting behind the ball

In this section of the blog we will be focusing on common faults and most importantly a drill on how too correct it. If you are the person who chunks the ball, catches it thin, fall back in the down swing, lifts up, thinks you grip is a problem, can’t get out of the sand, doesn’t hit it as far as you want, slices the ball, hooks the ball and want to fix it? Well you are in the right place. We will cover all that and more. Every week I will covering a different fault with a fix. This week we will discuss chunking t your shot.

First we will discuss why this shot happen. 95% of the time for the mid to high handicap golfer, it is the result of poor weight transfer and you never move forward in your downswing. As a result the bottom of the arc the club is swinging stays behind the ball and you hit the ground first. This is indicated in the video below.

Before we get into why hanging back happens. I need you to stop listening to these tips from friends..... “lift the ball in the air”, "try and get underneath the golf ball" or "keep your head still". All those tips are trash. Each one is giving you a mindset that is preventing you from moving forward in your golf swing.

Now let's get into it. What we are trying to do with our irons is hit the ball first and the ground second which creates backspin and the ball launches in the air. To do that, you will need to control the low point of your swing (the lowest point of the circle your club head is swinging on) which should be the ground on the target side of the ball. To do that there will need to be more weight on your lead foot than you do on your back foot when the club strikes the golf ball. Most people struggle with this because they have difficultly with being able to grasp the concept of starting the downswing from the ground up. The other issue is there is a mobility issue that we need to improve.

Below is a really good stretch for letting the hip flexors not as tight and a drill to work on transition and a bonus video for a drill you can do. I have about 3 or 4 more drills that I give to my students who go on the game improvement plan.

Note: You will need the Golf Forever Swing Trainer for the below drill. You can use my Promo Code JONSMITH for a discount.
