Why golfers come over the top

In my opinion coming over the top or "out to in" on the down swing is one of the most common swing flaws of your beginner to average golfer. This will produce one of two directions with your ball flight. You're either going to pull the shot or you will have the face of the club open to the path and you will hit a slice. In this post we are going to dive into why these swings happen. If you would like to fix them, you can click on the golf forever link in the menu and get to work.

Swing flaws are what is called an effect. What we are trying to find is the cause or cancer in the golf swing. Once we have identified what is causing this swing flaw to happen, then it becomes very easy to fix? Some of the most common reasons golfers come over the top is because they got a bad quick tip or there are physical limitations that are causing you to actually practice this movement in your golf swing.

What the path of the club will be doing on the downswing is usually dictated by the direction the club traveled to get to the top of the backswing. For beginner to intermediate players, most will take the club too far inside their toe line as they take start their backswing and it that will cause an over the top move on the way down.

There are a few reasons golfers will do this and I have found the main one to be coming up out of their posture to start their backswing which means there could be some physical limitations. Go to the fitness page to improve those flaws. The other reason is lack of a pivot or turn of your core during the backswing.

Below is a really good drill for curing your over the top move just by improving the motion of your body. The key for this drill is to make sure as you initiate the backswing that your lead shoulder works underneath of the trail shoulder. This will get the club more in front of your chest during the take away.
